DONATED COMPOST ENRICHES LOCAL SCHOOL GARDENS

Filling up our trusty HB trailer with compost for delivery to local schools

Over the past two weeks, Los Berros Elementary in Lompoc along with Orcutt Jr. High, Lakeview Jr. High, and the Boys & Girls Club in Santa Maria, have received help for their parched soil in the form of compost and topsoil.

Engel & Gray, Inc. has donated more than 430 cubic feet of compost and 375 cubic feet of topsoil to these schools in an effort to counteract effects of California's high temps and drought conditions. Adding organic matter in the form of compost and topsoil helps improve and protect valuable soil and most importantly, helps conserve valuable water resources.

2019 ICAW EVENT A SUCCESS

May 11, 2019: Engel & Gray, Inc. and Harvest Blend Compost® celebrated eleven years of “Completing the Cycle” with a fun filled, educational workshop at Mussell Senior Center and Community Garden. The focus of this year’s event was “Building healthy soil with compost”.

A near record turnout made this year's workshop so much fun! Bob started the festivites with an informative Power Point presentation on the importance of adding/maintaining soil organic matter to ensure healthy plants and landscapes.

JOEL STERN of Cherry Lane Nursery, shared his knowledge of drought resistant landscaping. Joel explained everything involved with establishing a successful landscape; from choosing the right plant for the right area to proper irrigation techniques. Holding up an unlikely pair of potted plants, Joel encouraged the group to ‘be adventurous’ with our plant pairings; tall with short and squat; green leafy alongside bright and colorful. There were plenty of questions and Joel answered every one. We look forward to welcoming Joel back in 2020!

BRYN SMITH wrapped up this year’s event sharing news of his latest project, revitalizing local baseball fields with compost. A former MLB pitcher, Bryn knows what it takes to create and maintain a ball field. “This has been years in the making,” said Smith, speaking about the revitalization of Morrison Park – the home of Orcutt’s Babe Ruth teams on Auto Park Drive, just off Skyway. “When the kids walk onto the field, they’re going to have some real pride in their ballpark.”

“This area has such a rich baseball history. This not only helps out the kids, it also helps the whole community,” said Smith. “Morrison is a fun area that’s already here. Hopefully this gets bigger and better and then, no matter the final score, everybody wins.”

COMPOST - THE SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION

Learn from Joe Lamp'l, of Growing a Greener World, how Certified Compost is the ideal product for all landscape projects.

Healthy soil is a 'tool' that mankind needs to survive. Healthy soil is one of nature's key tools in recycling, cleaning, and preserving our environment. this living, breathing organism that surrounds us makes all life, as we know it, possible. We need to save the soil, not only for plants, but for people as well. Soil is made up of many organic and inorganic components, living and nonliving. Soil organic matter is transient in nature and must be continually replinished. Locally produced, recycled organic matter is abundantly available to do just that in the form of COMPOST! Compost is a great tool but not all compost is created equal, which is why everyone should specify "Certified Compost" for all landscape projects, no matter the size.
