UCSB Begins

Campus Composting!

A new pilot project on campus is asking students to be more eco-friendly by composting their leftovers rather than trashing
them.

Spearheaded by the Associated Students Recycling Program, the pilot project has added composting receptacles to six existing recycling clusters on campus and lets students recycle their food scraps along with other trash and waste. If the project proves successful, the University could see an overhaul in environmentally friendly composting practices. For more on this project Click here

USCC Introduces

Consumer Compost

Use Program

We now have an easy way for the homeowner to identify quality compost products that can be applied to their specific gardening needs.”
Frank Franciosi, USCC President

When you visit your local Landscape Supply Center to purchase compost for a project, are you confused by the multitude of products stacked on the shelves? Would you like an easy way to identify the right product for the job? The USCC has developed a way to help the consumer make the right choice!

The USCC's
Consumer Compost Use Program has developed labels that will clearly identify the types of uses that a compost product may be used for. Those uses are:

Lawns
Trees & Shrubs
Flower & Vegetable Gardens

Choosing the label that best suits their needs, the consumer may purchase the correct products with complete confidence.

Each compost use classification is represented by easily interpreted icons that reflect the compost’s use (or uses). Only compost producers in the Seal of Testing Assurance program can use these symbols, as they are tied to the STA analytical data.

In July, the City of Santa Maria began their curbside Green Waste Recycling program. Recycling green waste not only protects our environment but preserves our natural resources. Instead of disposing of leaves, brush and grass into your trash can, you can now place those items in a container that will be collected every other week.

Yard materials collected from this program are diverted from the landfill and transported to Engel & Gray Regional Compost Facility where they are recycled into premium Harvest Blend Compost products.

The Green Waste Recycling program will extend the life of the landfill for a number of years,  allowing our city to delay the development of a costly, new landfill.  Let’s all make sure we pitch in and do our part in recycling green waste. It’s easy!

Remember, when you use compost made from recycled organic materials to heal soil and beautify lawns and gardens, you have successfully “Completed the Cycle”. Naturally!

What a Difference Harvest Blend Compost Can Make!

Photos taken 3 months apart

August, 2011: A project was begun to renovate land south of Santa Maria. To create a healthy foundation for seeding, premium Harvest Blend Compost was delivered to the location by Engel & Gray, Inc.

Working compost into the soil adds vital nutrients required to support growing plant life. It also increases soil’s water holding capacity, enabling roots to utilize soil moisture when they need it the most.

Sure, this is a large scale project, but Harvest Blend Compost can be used just as effectively on residential lawns and gardens. Contact
Info@HarvestBlendCompost.com for help with your next project.

And to learn more about the need for Soil Organic Matter, the US Composting Council is promoting the Strive for 5% campaign.
